The Machame Route, known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular paths to the summit. It offers excellent acclimatization with its climb-high, sleep-low profile.
Day 01 :
Machame Gate (1,800m) – Machame Camp (2,835m)
- Drive from Moshi/Arusha to Machame Gate (Approx. 1.5 - 2 hours)
- Complete park formalities and begin the trek through lush rainforest
- Trekking time: 5-7 hours
- Distance: 11km
- Overnight at Machame Camp
Day 02 :
Machame Camp (2,835m) – Shira Camp (3,850m)
- Steep ascent through moorland and rocky terrain
- Trekking time: 4-6 hours
- Distance: 5km
- Overnight at Shira Camp
Day 03 :
Shira Camp (3,850m) – Barranco Camp (3,950m)
- Hike via Lava Tower (4,600m) for acclimatization before descending
- Trekking time: 6-7 hours
- Distance: 10km
- Overnight at Barranco Camp
Day 04 :
Barranco Camp (3,950m) – Karanga Camp (3,995m)
- Climb the Barranco Wall and trek through alpine desert
- Trekking time: 4-5 hours
- Distance: 5km
- Overnight at Karanga Camp
Day 05 :
Karanga Camp (3,995m) – Barafu Camp (4,673m)
- Short but steep trek, preparing for the summit push
- Trekking time: 3-4 hours
- Distance: 4km
- Overnight at Barafu Camp
Day 06 :
Summit Day & Descent
- Midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point (5,756m)
- Descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m) for rest
- Trekking time: 12-14 hours
- Distance: 17km
- Continue descent to Mweka Gate (1,640m) and transfer back to Arusha/Moshi
